UC Berkeley's Oldest Prose Journal

Proudly publishing short fiction since 1981.

The Berkeley Fiction Review is a UC Berkeley undergraduate, student-run publication. We look for innovative short fiction that plays with form and content, as well as traditionally constructed stories with fresh voices and original ideas. We invite submissions of previously unpublished short stories year round and publish annually.

We nominate to the O. Henry, Best American Short Stories, and Pushcart prizes.

How the Review Works

• Read year round, published once a year. Stories reach us by email throughout the year, and the work we select appears together in a single annual print issue.
• Edited entirely by undergraduates. Three managing editors each semester work with nine assistant editors across the Campus, Distributions, and Community departments — meet the staff.
• Short-shorts have their own prize. Each issue opens with the winners of our Sudden Fiction Contest, a celebration of the short-short story, before the full-length fiction.
• Four decades in print. The archive lists every issue since 1981, and back issues are still available by mail.
