Previously unpublished short stories, read year round.

The Berkeley Fiction Review is a forum for short fiction, published annually. We look for innovative short fiction that plays with form and content, as well as traditionally constructed stories with fresh voices and original ideas. We invite submissions of previously unpublished short stories with these guidelines in mind:

• Submissions should be typed, double-spaced and single-sided, in 12 pt Times New Roman, and should not exceed 30 pages in length.
• Please include your name, email address, and phone number on the first page of the story.
• We only accept electronic submissions sent to [email protected], with "Submission: Name, Title" in the subject line (for example, Submission: John Doe, The Girl in the Pool).
• Stories should be attached to the email as a document file.

We accept submissions year round and nominate selected work to the O. Henry, Best American Short Stories, and Pushcart prizes.

Before You Submit

The best way to understand what we publish is to read the journal. Browse the current issue to see the range of voices and forms we select, then explore the archive of issues published since 1981. A few things worth checking before you send your story:

• One story per submission. Send a single previously unpublished story rather than a collection, and keep it within the 30-page limit.
• Proofread your first page. Your name, email, and phone number should appear there, and your subject line should follow the Submission: Name, Title format so we can file your work correctly.
• We publish annually. Selections appear in our next print issue, which you can later order by mail or find through the independent bookstores that carry us.
